The new terminal was inaugurated recently.A total of 610 acres (27,000,000 sq ft) of land is under acquisition for the expansion of the runway to 12,500 ft (3,800 m) to accommodate large jet aircraft. This terminal with an area of 17,600 m2 (189,000 sq ft) can handle a passenger capacity of 250 each on arrival and departure.citation needed] With the inauguration of this new terminal, Madurai airport would see an addition of international destinations. There is a public demand for direct connectivity to Singapore, Dubai and Kuala Lumpur. SriLankan Airlines had visited the airport in keen interest for commencement flights to Colombo. AirAsia too has expressed its interest in opertating flights to Madurai from Kuala Lumpur.
MADURAI: Competition among the airlines in the Madurai-Chennai sector is hotting up with the Jet Airlines introducing Boeing 737 aircraft from Friday. The move will not only increase the number of seats available on the sector, but also reduce airfare significantly.
Airport sources said that Jet Airways would operate the 118-seater Boeing aircraft instead of the ATR aircraft in its morning and evening services. The operator has intended to use it till September 30.
Though the airline sources said that it was only a temporary “fleet-plan” arrangement, travel industry here feels that the airline could consider operation of bigger aircraft on a permanent basis in the long run. “The volume of air passengers from Madurai has increased on a fast pace. The demand is expected to further increase,” said N. Sriram, director of Balika Tours and Travels.
Stating that Spicejet would be introducing its services with Boeing aircraft from this month-end, he said that it would force other players also to fly bigger aircraft.
“A popular perception among passengers is that bigger aircraft are safer. If the services of flight operators are similar, people prefer the one who flies the bigger aircraft,” he said
He pointed out that the immediate impact of Jet Airways flying Boeing aircraft was that it would be doubling the number of seats in the two flight services. He expected that the average airfare that was hovering around Rs. 8,000 on Madurai-Chennai sector would come down by at least Rs. 2,000. Early booking could help passengers save much more, he said.
However, the real airfare war would start only after low-cost airline Spicejet begins its services from September 27. It would be operating daily flights to New Delhi and Mumbai, with a touchdown in Chennai.
Meanwhile, in its winter schedule, Jet Airways would introduce a new flight service to Bangalore from Madurai from October 31, Mr. Sriram said.

Since madurai is between 3 to 4hrs distance from many important tourist locations & pilgrimage locations such as Kodaikanal, Thekkady periyar wildlife sanctury, courtallam, Rameswaram, Palani etc etc I am sure madurai will attract more foreign airlines than trichy. Madurai itself is known worldwide for meenakshi temple. Also middle east has good number of people from south TN. Atpresent most of them fly to Trivandrum and take taxi. They will find madurai as more convenient and better. So madurai will have definitely international connections starting with Middle east and far east by next Feb/March.Atpresent madurai airport has 4 aprons and steps are taken to increase it to 6.
New terminal of trichy is having an area of around 11000 Sq.Mtrs and Madurai terminal will have built up area of 17600 Sq.Mtrs. Roughly 50% more than trichy terminal size.
